Christmas Part 3 - Mole National Park

We then eventually got on a bus up to Tamale (oh the stories to do with travel… there are really beautiful places to visit in Ghana but you do have to kind of expect problems wherever and whenever you travel anywhere – even if it’s just a trip to our local ‘big city’ – like my Mum mentioned in her blog entries (thanks for doing them Mum) every journey is an adventure!) From Tamale we tried to head to Mole National which is along a notoriously bad stretch of road, however when we got to the bus station at 9am that morning the woman behind the counter just took one look at us and said; ‘It’s full!’ We hadn’t even said where we wanted to go, but she was right – all the tickets had gone (although in reality that bus never actually went anywhere that day we later discovered!) so we ended up doing a mixture of a tro (shared minibus) ride to Damongo and then a taxi for the last bit. It actually worked out for the best though because we ended up getting to Mole in time for the afternoon safari walk (the bus would have arrived in the evening) and that was actually the only time we saw elephants during the 3 or 4 days we were there.

So Christmas was spent there, lots of chilling by the swimming pool, eating food and generally enjoying ourselves. Although Grahame’s family have a tradition of going for a run on Christmas day so we too dragged ourselves out of bed fairly early and then went for a 12km run to Larabanga (where the ‘oldest’ mosque in Ghana is – see Mum’s blog entries – it looks like a bit of a hedgehog building!) which nearly killed me, although was actually quite enjoyable – or maybe that was the getting back and collapsing! Later we went for a canoe safari which was very pretty but we didn’t actually see any animals. Still a cool way to spend Christmas.
