The next step in the travelling was to continue north up to Navrongo where I live, which actually went fairly painlessly. Well, that is apart from the fact that having got the 4am (yes 4am…) bus to Tamale where we found a tro to Bolgatanga, bought out tickets and loaded our luggage up before going to grab some breakfast as the tro was empty and you have to wait until it’s full before it’ll leave. When we came back the tro looked a little strange and we soon realised why. It was a different one – the other one had gone along with our luggage! As it was it wasn’t a problem, the guy phoned the driver and then unloaded it at Bolga and we picked it up when we got the next tro. Caused a few moments panic at the time but all turned out fine in the end.
So onto the next adventure! We’d meet a guy, Seph, who’s working in Ouagadougou at Mole who was travelling back up north at the same time as us, so we’d travelled together. So once we got to Bolga I showed him where the shared taxis to Paga (the border crossing with Burkina) were only to be informed that the border was closed because the 2nd round of the general election was the next day... So we had a house guest for a couple of days which was good fun – it’s brilliant all the random people you get to meet on your travels who become friends. Whilst they were here I showed them all the sights: my house, the borehole, the Lucian (best restaurant in town!) and the local spot (‘bar’) and we had a really chilled time. Although I think in reality we spent most of the time drinking tea and eating biscuits and toast (neither of the lads have toasters here so they were in their element! Again; amazing the things that become really exciting here.) Seph then left early Monday leaving Grahame and I to have Christmas x2! So another run, then we decorated the living room and listened to Christmas carols. We then had our makeshift Christmas dinner of barbequed chicken (very yummy) yam chips, bread and salad – it was gorgeous! (Although, not a patch on my Auntie Sarah’s cooking) Followed by mince pies, care of my Mum who brought them out when she came to visit and presents! One of which was ‘Mumma Mia’ on DVD so Grahame very graciously watched it with me that evening – although I think that’s his quota of chick flicks done for the year... ah, but now it’s 2009! He he he! It was a great day all in all.
